| Myth #2 - If you give up your desires, you will be more spiritual. This is a damaging myth. The confusion about this concept is that the Bible does encourage us to be a living sacrifice and to die to ourselves. But God has also promised to fulfill the desires of our hearts as we follow Him. The problem is that most people do not know the basic difference between the desires of the flesh and the desires of the heart. Galations says that the works of the flesh are selfish ambition, dissention, control, jealousies, envy, addictions, uncontrolled sex, anger, idolatry, and the like. These are the destructive things which have been crucified. When somebody lives according to these things, it hurts them and everyone around them. It is obvious that we should not walk in a way that is damaging to us and to others. It is an entirely different thing to bury the good things, the talents, gifts, and dreams which God has given to us, thinking that to do so will be pleasing to Him. Jesus said that He came so that we could have abundant LIFE. When people get confused and bury the good things in their lives, in their lack of fulfillment, they begin to manifest the very things that Galations says we should not walk in. The more we give in to the false idea that it is spiritual to bury our gifts, talents, and good desires, the more the "Christian" life will become empty, false, and frustrating, and the more the Christian community will become judgmental, tense, and unpleasant. It is vital to turn away from the things that weigh you down AND to pursue with God's leading, the things which makes you vibrant, unique, and alive. So, allow God to fulfill all the good dreams and desires He has given to you. Myth # 2 Busted. Trust in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. |
