Repent!
The word "repent" conjures up a feeling of harsh and antiquated religion. But actually it isn't a bad word... and it isn't a bad idea.
Some think that the word repent means "feel guilty". But the word has nothing to do with feelings. The word "repent" means to stop doing one thing, turn around 180 degrees, and start doing another.
We cannot do one thing to add to the wonderful gift of salvation we have received. But we can respond to it with a life that is given to God.
John the Baptist would not have cried, "Repent!", unless people had the power to make decisions and to change the course of their lives.
If we lie, we need to tell the truth. If we cheat, we need to take courage and be honest. If we steal, the Bible tells us to stop stealing and instead trust God for His blessing. If we commit adultery, we need to give that to God so that we don't hurt ourselves and others.
Sin is destructive to people, yourself and others. That is why it is a great idea to repent. If you were driving 80mph towards a sheer cliff, repenting would be a great idea. It would mean stopping the car, turning around, and going the other direction.
Most sins are declarations of a lack of trust in God or of a misunderstanding about His love for us.
We all sin at times - so it sure is a good thing that our perfect standing before God is a gift through Jesus. Repenting does not change our standing with God one way or another, it is a response to the amazing gift we have been given. We'll never be worthy of it in ourselves, but Jesus made us worthy.
Put away the sins that entangle you. Decide that God is real and that He loves you and has provided abundantly for you. Declare the Good News with your whole life. Sin no more.
