Grace and Grease

In Romans 7, Paul refers to the law where a woman was bound to her husband as long as he lived, even if he dismissed her and remarried. But if her husband died, she was free to remarry. Paul is not giving a marriage teaching there...he is saying that if, deep inside yourself, you have not let the Law and legalism completely die, you will not be free to love God with your whole heart.

When people first realize the full measure of God's grace and their resulting freedom, the initial response is often fear. Our freedom is so vast that it can be intimidating! This is when many people cry "Greasy Grace!" and run back to the predictability and false security of the rules and regs. Human beings are difficult to free.

Because our spirits are reborn, our freedom doesn't produce lawlessness. We are free us to draw close to God without fear of judgment. The Bible says that the strength of sin is the law. God's grace, on the other hand, awakens the desire and provides the strength to walk away from sin. Sin kills. It hurts you and everyone around you-- a believer doesn't need a law to see that! Grace is both freedom from law and freedom from sin.

That's why we can say that God's grace is limitless - and also not the least bit greasy. Now that we are free, what will we do with our lives? I don't know about you, but I'm going to serve my loving Father who bought me, freed me, and transformed my life.

There is a lot of talk these days about "Greasy Grace" .... that God's grace cannot really be limitless, because then we could do whatever we wanted. The bottom line is: What do you really want to do?
