David's Bad Day
He and his army came home to find their houses had been plundered and burned, and their wives and families had been taken away. The Bible says they wept until they could weep no more.

As if that wasn't bad enough, David's men then became bitter, and turned on him. They blamed the disaster on David and threatened to kill him!

Now that is a bad day.

Then there is a remarkable verse. It simply says, "but David strengthened himself in his God". How he did this is not explained. Perhaps he first removed himself from his men so that he could begin to see with a God perspective. He may then have reminded himself of the events in his life where seemingly impossible things were achieved by believing God. Perhaps he began to sing the songs he was so famous for... songs about God's triumphs in the midst of defeat.

Then, the Bible says that David asked God for his next move. David was given the victory for the ensuing battle before he even began to march. He was told by God that everyone and everything would be recovered.

Even after the battle, when David and his men were returning home victorious, David continued to acknowledge God. Some of his men were greedy about sharing the spoils with those who had not fought. But David reminded them that their success had been from God, rather than from their own efforts. The riches were distributed to all of David's people.

This is such a wonderful story. It reminds us that even when things look absolutely hopeless, we can strengthen ourselves in our God! Though David may seem like a hero to us, he was a human like we are. But he had a big God. When we give our lives to Jesus, we have the same God in us that David prayed to. We just have to believe it!
