Halloween isn't the greatest holiday to celebrate. It is associated with darkness, ghosts and demons.
Some Christians celebrate on Halloween and some take the Bah Humbug approach - they turn the lights out and lock the gates.
The Bible says that one day is like another... in God's eyes, no day has particular significance as being either holy or evil. But everyday is a day to celebrate what the Lord has done.
Since Christians have something to celebrate everyday, we don't let Halloween stop us. We dress as angels or royalty or as positive literary characters, and we use the day as an opportunity to meet, greet, and love on all the kids in the neighborhood.
The reason we do this is that when Christians turn the lights out on this dubious holiday, they are basically making the statement that the devil really does own the day. But Halloween may be the best opportunity all year for us to display the idea of being "in it but not of it".
Rather than forbidding your kids to participate in the festivities, educate them about the origins of Halloween and explain why the holiday isn't the greatest. But then tell them that in spite of this, our God is more powerful than any ghoulish thing, and every day belongs to Him. This teaches a kid confidence in God and a loving attitude about people who don't know God yet.
It would be great if Halloween would disappear and Oct 31st would become like any other day. But since that won't happen anytime soon... we can "seize the day" and do God's good works in it. WF
